We had a scare the other day with my Father in Law. He’d called me at about 7:30 in the evening to remind me about something and he said that he was feeling off. I asked him if he was having pain or if he was just tired and he said “No, no pain, I think I just over did things on the weekend”. So you’re tired? Yeah, very tired.
We got off the phone a little while after that and then two hours later we got a call from my husbands oldest sister saying that her mom had just called her from the hospital. She’d taken my FIL to the hospital because he was complaining of chest pain but that his pain, when asked by the doctors was only about a 4 out of 10 .. so not too bad.
I immediately wondered if it was his gallbladder because he’d just been diagnosed with gall stones, although he hadn’t ever experienced any kind of pain from them up to that point.
Anyway the hospital he was in only did one blood test … for Troponin, we believe, as that’s an enzyme the heart puts out when it’s been damaged. They didn’t do a full work up to see if anything else was off.
After we heard that my husband father was sick we called his other sister (my husbands, not his fathers sister – if we’d called her she’d start thinking he was going to die and begin asking about funeral costs or something!) and she thought it was probably his gall bladder too.
With both his sister and I (both of us nurses) thinking his fathers symptoms sounded more like gall stones/gall bladder my husband calmed down a bit. His father is turning 82 this coming Monday so it’s easy to worry when he gets sick .. plus he already had one mild heart attack a few years ago.
Anyway .. they discharged him from the hospital at about 2:30 in the morning and he’s seeing his family doctor today … it seems it wasn’t a heart attack, but we still don’t know for sure what caused his chest pain.
Don’t you hate it when you have a health scare in your family?
